Digital Scandinavia: Future art and design practitioners mine optimism
Digital Scandinavia is a collaborative interdisciplinary art and design initiative that asks students to engage in digital process-based research that explores design of varying scales and questions the very state of contemporary art practice. During the summer of 2009, a group of University of Colorado students and faculty from the College of Arts and Media (Denver) and the College of Architecture and Planning (Denver and Boulder) came together to explore just what makes the Scandinavian art and design mentality tick. They explored ideas of process while meeting practitioners, interviewing artists and designers, and reveled in the urban spaces of two Scandinavian capitals: Copenhagen and Bergen, Norway.
In multidisciplinary teams, the students were charged with designing projects that directly embody their research conducted in Scandinavia. These bodies of work were developed over the five-week course by means of blogging and design process. In addition to exploiting digital media as a tool of research, the students speak poignantly to the potential for design to engage large, complex social and political issues. The journey culminates in an exhibit at RedLine located at 2350 Arapahoe Street, Denver. A reception on Friday, October 2, 2009 from 7 to 10 p.m. coincides with an article in the fall edition of Modern in Denver.
